This rug employs the latest sustainability techniques and thus belongs to the most sustainable choices.

Ouroboros is a low-pile, fully circular, jacquard woven rug. This technique is centuries old and allows for very complex weaving patterns. The rug is designed in the Netherlands and is woven and hand-finished in Belgium. It has a subtle and timeless geometric design.

Made from 100% ECONYL®. By using a special extrusion, the material is very soft. The rug is very robust and easy to maintain.

ECONYL® is made entirely from waste. However, the fiber, due to the use of the latest recycling techniques, is literally like new. ECONYL® is infinitely recyclable without loss of quality and is therefore unique and specially designed for circular design.

This rug is designed to last a long time. However, after its end of life, we take back the rug free of charge so it can be fully recycled. Instructions for this are listed on the back of the rug. Return is desirable but not obligatory.

We invest all our profits in our vision: promoting circular design. We do not distribute profits. Read more about the Social Business concept.

Circular design

This rug is made with the end in mind, also known as circular design. The starting point for each of our designs is to consider what happens to our product at the end of its life. We have applied the latest sustainability techniques in the design and production of this rug. A brief explanation follows below. The ECONYL® revolution

This rug is made from 100% ECONYL®. We like to say that this is not just another fiber, but a unique one. It possesses two very special properties. First and foremost, it is entirely made from nylon 6 waste, with old carpets and fishing nets being the main, but not the only, processed waste streams. This collection and processing chain is fully established by the company that produces the ECONYL® fiber, the Italian company Aquafil. Learn more about this process.

A fiber made from recycled materials is not unique. What makes ECONYL® unique and suitable for circular applications is that it can be recycled over and over again without losing quality. ECONYL® calls this regeneration. Instead of melting, which is the standard recycling method, ECONYL® is depolymerized. This means breaking it down to its original building block. The result is a molecule that is exactly the same as that of a new fiber. This can be done time and time again.

Often misused

As described, ECONYL® is a fiber with the unique opportunity for full regeneration. However, incorrect usage can cause it to lose almost all its strength. Many manufacturers use ECONYL® solely for its marketing value because the story of using fishing nets resonates with many consumers. But ECONYL® is much more than that; it is a regeneration system. Manufacturers play a crucial role in maximizing the use of this system.

We still see that manufacturers often use ECONYL® without considering the regeneration system. Two very important criteria are not applied:

1. Take back: If the product is not taken back at the end of its life, there can be no regeneration. Without take-back, there is no circular economy. It is a great waste that a product that can be recycled very effectively ends up in a landfill or incinerator.

2. Designed for regeneration: As described, ECONYL® can be regenerated time and time again without losing quality. However, this only applies to that specific fiber. In almost all applications, ECONYL® is still mixed with other materials. In addition, additives and adhesive layers are often used. This affects the recycling percentage. In many cases, recycling is even impossible because materials cannot be separated. Such a construction also generates residual waste streams.

Using ECONYL® without considering take-back and deconstruction at the end of life diminishes the unique power of the fiber.

New Weave

All New Weave's are designed for deconstruction. In fact, the regeneration yield of our rugs is 100%. We have adapted modern manufacturing techniques to eliminate the need for materials other than ECONYL® completely. Additionally, we guarantee take-back, ensuring recycling and, therefore, regeneration are assured. The rug is returned to a new state at the molecular level and can be used for a new carpet or another product made from ECONYL®, such as clothing, sunglasses, or furniture.
